Part II: Poker’s Modern Day Female Warriors
Poker has certainly come a long way since the days of illegal back alley tournaments and Mafia run card houses during the Prohibition. Although poker in America received a setback that sent everyone back to the 1960’s due to Congress banning all forms of online gambling save dog and horse racing (go figure how those remained legal). For years women poker players were the exception as opposed to a regular fixture at the felt tables, but nowadays the majority of poker players are still men but women are rapidly catching on and are slowly making their mark in poker tournaments all over the country.
Unfortunately it will likely be many years before women reach an equal representation at poker tables, but there are increasingly many outstanding women who have begun to dominate the tables they show up at. Below, in no particular order, is a list of the best of the best – the women who are making men respect the fair sex all over the world:
Jennifer Harman
It’s difficult to discuss poker’s best female players without mentioning Jennifer Harman. To date, she has two WSOP bracelets around her wrist that she earned at the time she became a professional card player at the age of 21. Nowadays she can be found playing at some of the most impressive high roller tables in the world including the Big Game at the Bellagio. She was also part of the group of poker players who went up against multi-millionaire Andy Beal, and during this match she raked the largest known pot in a cash game in history, a sum reaching over $1.7 million dollars. She is a regular at the $3000 / $6000 limit Hold’em tables, and her total career tournament winnings sit just shy of $2 million nowadays. Arguably, Harman’s biggest accomplishment came in 2000 when she won the WSOP 2-7 Triple Draw tournament: amazingly, she had never even played the game before the tournament!
Annie Duke
Another mainstay on the poker scene, Annie Duke holds the honor of being the most successful female poker player in the history of the World Series of Poker. To date, she has made it to 11 final tables and has accumulated more than $500,000 in winnings. The sister of accomplished poker star Howard ‘The Professor’ Lederer, Annie Duke has had no problem emerging from the shadow of her brother. During her first WSOP event in 2004 she actually knocked him out early on in the Main Event and went on to win the Tournament of Champions along with a $2 million prize. Her total career winnings have now surpassed $3,476,942. Most importantly, Duke has been an outspoken critic of the US government for banning online gambling and has been consistently working towards its re-legalization.
Barbara Enright
Barbara Enright began playing poker at home while she was only four years old. A passionate player, she began playing in card rooms in 1976. Since then she has become one of the most recognized professional female poker players in the world. Over the years Barbara has accumulated an impressive stack of titles and records. More importantly, she has been one of the founding spokesman for women in the game as an author and magazine editor. She is also a WSOP bracelet winner. Her career winnings have easily exceeded $1 million at this point. For years she was the only person to reach the final table at the WSOP Main Event but now other women share this accomplishment.
Kathy Liebert
Kathy Liebert, who made the number one spot of the highest earning woman poker player of all time on pokernews.com, is easily one of the best women poker players that have ever lived. Liebert recently passed the $4 million mark which is more than any other woman has one in tournament play by far. She has been playing poker for over 15 years and has an impressive record to show for it: she has garnered multiple first-place finishes as well as earning a WSOP bracelet, and she has made it to more final tables than any other woman so far, including 23 cashes at the WSOP and 13 cases at the WPT (five of which were earned at the final table.) Besides playing poker, Liebert is also active in the stock market and also holds a blue belt in Karate.
Cyndy Violette
Poker’s spiritual and health guru, Cyndy Violette is one of the most recognizable faces in poker today. Although she is small in stare, this fearsome poker player demands respect. Raised in Atlantic City, Violette has now been playing poker professionally for over 23 years, and she has accumulated an impressing $1.3 million throughout various tournaments. During the 2006 WSOP Cyndy Violette went on a rampage cashing in an impressive seven events – it felt as if one could not watch a final table during the 2006 WSOP without seeing the familiar bubbly blonde all over the television screens. Unfortunately she was not able to claim a bracelet that year, but she did manage to wrap one of the coveted bracelets over her wrist after winning the 2004 WSOP $2,000 Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo Split.
Annette Obrestad
Last but not least on our list is the young Norwegian poker phenomenon Annette Obrestad. Obrestad began playing poker online at the age of 15 and quickly caught on to the finer points of the game. To date, she is the youngest person ever to win a WSOP bracelet and is also considered to be one of the best online multi-table tournament players in the world. She has earned the bulk of her money on Pokerstars as well as UltimateBet and her nickname “Annette15” is one of the most feared on these sites. On September 17th 2007 Obrestad made poker history when she won the inaugural World Series of Poker Europe Main Event the day before she turned 19. Her winnings totaled one million-pound sterling or US $2.1 million. In the short years since this incredible young woman began playing poker she has accumulated a more than impressive $2,481,868. One day soon Annette Obrestad may very well go down as the greatest professional female poker player of all time.
Although these women have showed the world that women can play cards just as well as any man, there is still a long way before women reach an equal status with their male peers. Despite the fact that the growth of women in the game is now higher than men, the image of women in the poker world is unacceptable. The sexualization of the female body is a travesty in the poker world. Part III of Women and Poker will examine the way in which the female form is constantly exploited for its sexual appeal in the poker world.
Online Poker Forums: Another Tool To Improve Your Game

Almost any activity you can think of has an online forum dedicated solely for the discussion and exchange of information on that particular topic. Forums have been around in the form the dial-up bulletin boards and internet newsgroups that were popular in the 1980s and 1990s. The internet forum has since evolved into one of the most used tools the internet has to offer. Any topic you can imagine more than likely has numerous forums with regular participants. Poker is absolutely no exception, as there are thousands of poker websites which offer their visitors a forum to join in on the discussions.
Poker forums are a magnet for the novice as well as the seasoned poker professional. These forums feed the avid poker player the much needed information in all aspects of poker play, types of poker and the latest news. Some poker forums are solely for announcing the big poker tournaments which run throughout the year. The reader gets filled in on where the tournament is to be played as well as the particulars on play qualifications.
Poker related forums can also be game type specific. Sites are popping up everyday based solely on one game in particular, Texas Hold’em. Do a web search for that topic and you’ll be amazed at the number of sites which have devoted themselves to this one game. Seven Card Stud and Omaha Poker are also very popular forum topics as well. These card games have enough of a loyal following that the site owners receive thousands of visitors each and every day. Site owners offset the cost of running there forums with advertising related to the niche.
There are certainly some very good reasons why poker players would want to search out and become a member of these forums. One of which is the fact that a player can improve his game by frequenting high quality poker forums. By high quality, the forum should be well maintained with fresh news and happenings in the world of poker. If the last entry is more than a few days old, then the forum is a slow one. A slow forum is not necessarily a bad forum, but if you’re looking for updated content then you can do better.
The benefits a player gets from poker forums are:
Staying Updated: The world of poker has a lot of tournaments being held all year round. Poker players can be advised of local tournaments in their area and who will be there as well as the fees and prizes involved.
Game Improvement: More experienced players trading game stories and past experiences of how they handled a situation can help the novice player when faced with the same circumstances.
Tips and Tricks: Talk to a veteran poker player who’s willing to mentor and I’ll bet you’ll learn more from them than you will any of the poker books you’ll find for sale. A smart poker player never takes the time to think he can’t learn a new trick or two, and neither should you. Learning the game of poker is easy, but to master it takes a lifetime. Take advantage of the free advice those who have played many years have to offer.
Poker forums are a tool which any poker player can use to brush up on their game, catch up on the news in poker, or find out how last Friday night’s garage game went with Fred and the gang. Visit just a few of these gems, and you’ll become a card carrying member of the poker forum club.
Dealing With Drunken Players While Playing Poker

Being Patient and Selective Pays at the Poker Table
Playing poker with a drunken partner at the poker table can get a little tricky for a player at Ladbrokes poker games. It often becomes extremely difficult to ascertain their moves since drunken players tend to play recklessly without paying much attention to their hands. This makes it all the more complex for other players at the poker table. Slow going sessions with a friendly and comfortable atmosphere all around can be painfully transformed to a battlefield by some wild moves by a drunken poker player.
Imagine a situation where you had been playing a comfortable poker hand at Ladbrokes poker. You have created a rough estimate of those who are playing around you and are pretty sure of the moves that they might make. In fact, there has not been a single unexpected pre-flop raise and you have settled in to the belief that you would be able to grind a profit from the game if everything goes according to your plan.
Eventually you notice one of your drunken opponents dealing in and raising carelessly. Without even thinking twice, your bleary-eyed opponent just threatened your position at a Ladbrokes poker game. When others start noticing the scenario, they too will react and the whole game will undergo a sea change right in front of your eyes. Every player at the table realizes his opportunity and tries to cash in as much as possible. Your drunken opponent in the meantime keeps betting without a second thought. He constantly bluffs and shows his cards every other hand.
In fact, this is an ideal situation for poker players to feed on a weak one who is just waiting to be eaten up by all. At the end of the day at Ladbrokes poker games, you will find many players waiting for such a situation to happen. Nobody wants to play a hard game of poker when money is so readily available at the table. However, you must be aware of the player who everybody thinks is weak but who can just bust you up. At the Ladbrokes poker table, it often becomes annoying to watch everyone at the table raking in all the pots, while you can’t keep a hand together.
An intelligent poker player will never lose patience in such tight situations. To force anything can often lead to disaster. Call your pre-flop raises wisely. Raise only with a strong hand. Just because you feel that your drunken opponent can raise with worse hands doesn’t justify your raise with mediocre cards. At Ladbrokes poker games, you have to be very selective and patient with your moves.
The J-7 suited will always remain a heavy mathematical underdog to most starting hands and it is also impossible to bluff without making a hand. But when you finally walk into a hand like kings or aces, you can limp-in with it. When it’s your turn you can plant a re-raise on your opponent. You may also want to take the benefit of pot odds in position at the Ladbrokes poker games. Be careful so as not to go heads up with the drunken man just because you think he is weak. Wait for your time to come and be sure to cash in when you get the opportunity.

The internet has helped to fuel a major increase in the number of people who play poker. There are numerous websites that allow you to sign up and play online poker games as often as you want. If you know how to play the game, Poker is a great way to enjoy your time and also offers the possibility of winning a lot of money. If you are new to online poker and are looking to adopt some advice that may help you then this is the article for you. Read on to discover the importance of choosing the right table plus many other great tips.
Perhaps the best advice that a new poker player can receive is to make sure that you learn every aspect of the game. This seems straight forward, but it is amazing how many people fail to do this and then lose a lot of money due to their lack of knowledge. Most reputable online poker sites will have beginner’s guide or an FAQ’s section and this is perfect for your needs. As well you can study the games to pick up strategies and other useful methods. Do not be afraid to ask your fellow poker players about something that you are unsure of. Most, I am certain will be willing to offer advice.
When you are learning the basics of online poker, it is important to get in to good habits from the beginning. With this in mind, you need to adopt good etiquette when engaged in poker rooms. Theses rooms are monitored and as such it is important that you respect other poker players, Each site will follow a set of guidelines that will need to be adhered to otherwise you will be banned. Generally, common sense prevails in these circumstances and as long as you are polite and avoid confrontation with other players then your experience in playing poker will hopefully be a positive one.
Once you become a little bit more experienced at playing poker you should learn to recognize that choosing which site and table to use can be the decider when it comes to winning.
Some sites will be used by professionals who obviously will display a much higher skill level than the average poker player. Therefore the odds of you beating them are greatly reduced. Likewise, each table will comprise of poker players with different skill levels. The best advice here would be to properly research a poker site beforehand and look for reviews that offer an insight into the skill levels of the average player at that particular site. Ideally you want to play against those players who are less experienced.
The final tip that I can offer is to make sure that you take a break from the table from time to time. So many poker players make bad judgments during games simply because they have been playing for long sessions and have become fatigued. Do not allow yourself to become distracted during a game and make sure that you stay fresh as poker is all about making good decisions at the right time.
So there you have it. Four tips to help you enjoy the wonderful experience of playing online poker. Poker is a great game to play and I hope that you to take the time to learn the game and subsequently win as often as I do.
Poker Book Review : The Illustrated Guide to Texas Hold’Em

At a time when new poker books are pouring onto store shelves, Dennis Purdy is the first author to offer a unique approach to learning poker with The Illustrated Guide to Texas Hold’Em. The former gambling pro uses a visual problem-solving approach rather than a textual approach at teaching poker strategy.
The first three chapters of the guide start off very similarly to many beginner books on the poker market, covering the basic rules of how to play Hold’Em, what you might wear to a table, how much you should buy-in for and some rules of good poker etiquette. The fourth chapter presents eight brief rules of ‘good basic poker strategy’ followed by a detailed explanation of actual odds and pot odds. Chapter five is where this book becomes unique as the next 300 pages are filled with 150 different, illustrated Texas Hold’Em poker scenarios, matched with the author’s answer to each of the practice situations! Purdy ends the book with a noteworthy 30 page poker terminology glossary.
The cover indicates that this guide may make a winner out of an advanced player but this book was really designed to captivate those unlikely readers that shy away from the other poker books already published. The introduction warns that this book is not ‘targeted towards sophisticated and knowledgeable players’, and I would agree. Advanced players will find too many examples stating the obvious like situation #2: folding 27 offsuit before the flop.
Purdy’s advice is mostly in-line with most other poker authors however there are certainly some debatable answers to a few of his problems (i.e. Problem #46 suggests to cap the betting with 36s pre-flop?). There is often more than one correct way to play any individual poker hand however I sometimes found myself wondering why Purdy would suggest such advanced plays, especially since these situations can be easily misinterpreted by new players. The intention of this guide may have been to give definitive situational advice to poker scenarios, however, I suggest that readers actually place more importance on the general strategy advice given in the answers rather than the specific action to take. It’s really the whole strategic approach you take to the game that will make the most difference in your results.
The visual representation of each of the poker situations is by far this book’s greatest asset. I personally know readers to have picked up this book after ignoring the other acclaimed texts on the premise of its simple and fun-looking learning method. Another quality point is that no commitment is needed as the reader can easily review a couple pages and put the book back down again without losing the value of the material. The teaching pattern also follows through with its ideas, enabling the reader to encounter the same notions and strategies in various problems throughout the book (for example, each of situations #17, #38 & #148 address folding small pocket pairs in early position before the flop).
Due to the popular nature of problem solving game books, this style of teaching poker is expected to appeal to many players and will most likely be adopted in more books to come. Like many books of its nature, The Illustrated guide to Texas Hold’Em is not recommended as the only book to teach you sound poker strategy, but as a visual practice supplement for those players not interested in studying the more technical texts. Readers that insist on keeping the fun and excitement first and foremost in their poker education will appreciate this chance to learn without being bogged down with abstract concepts or complicated terminology.

The initial starting hand is composed of four hole cards dealt face down. Aside from this, 5 board cards are dealt face up in the center of the table and are considered as community cards. It is one of the most popular poker games in the world and is usually portrayed in television shows and movies. World Poker Tour and World Series Poker are some of the tournaments devoted for it.
Texas Hold Em is played in Pacific Poker starts with the players dealing their two hole cards faced down. This is done by each player starting with the one seated on the left of the button. The player, who can make the best-ranked five cards using the community cards with his hole cards, wins the game.
The fifth and last game found in Pacific Poker is the 7-Card Stud game. It is a game where players have one or more face up cards. It is described as the most played poker in public card rooms. This has three versions that can be played in Pacific Poker. These are High, Low and High-Low Split games. In 7 Card Stud Low, the player who obtains the lowest hand wins the pot while one with the highest hand wins in the 7 Card Stud High. In 7-Card Stud High-Low Split, if no one among the players qualifies for the low, the entire pot is given to the high hand.

Poker Strategy – Texas Holdem

Texas Holdem is a game of poker odds, luck, and outplaying your opponent. Most people ask “what is the best poker strategy Texas Holdem”? That answer is a very simple one but it depends on a lot of factors. When we talk about the best poker strategy for this article we are going to be referring to poker sit and go’s. Sit n go’s are probably the single most powerful game to make a stable income playing poker games on the internet. There are many factors that go into your success of winning a poker tournament or sit and go. If you are just starting out and do not know what sit n go’s are, let’s discuss briefly.
Sit n go’s are a poker tournament consisting of 10, 9, or 6 players. The most common form of a sitngo is 9 players. There is only a few poker sites such as absolute poker that have 10 player sit and go’s. Almost all sites you run into you will see 9 player sit and go’s and 6 player sit and go’s. I would try to avoid 6 player sit and go’s as much as possible, they just are not profitable. With 9 player sit and go’s the object of the poker tournament is to be the last player standing out of 9 players. The top 3 left make it to the money. If you finish in the top 3, at worst you at least DOUBLED your money. Texasholdem poker is extremely profitable because of this. A 9 player sit n go may take you at most 40 minutes, once you develop a great poker strategy with a lot of holdem help you can constantly play high stakes and make as much profit per hour as you would like. Once you get good, you will be playing 100 dollar sit n go’s in no time. First place for a 100 dollar sit n go is 450 bucks. 350 dollar profit in 40 minutes of work is not to shabby. This is done everyday by so many people across the world. They play sit and go’s as a constant and stable living while most people are throwing all their money away in a cash game. Cash games are horrible. The number one reason why is bad beats! Bad beats are a part of poker and there is nothing you can do. I can’t tell you how many bad beats Doyle Brunson has taken in his life time in which he describes so well in his brunson super system poker book. Bad beats are part of the game and no matter how well you outplay and outsmart your opponent they are going to happen. That is why you need to limit your losses and by playing sit and go’s your losses are limited. You can only lose a set amount per game (the tourney buy-in) and nothing more. If you suffer a huge beat this high in stakes it may cost you 100 bucks in a sit and go, but in a cash game you may be looking at a 1k or higher loss.

Online Poker – Learn to Play for Free, and the Chance to Win

All of the online poker rooms offer you the opportunity to play poker without risking a penny of your own money. You just download and install the software, open an account and then login. You don’t have to give any payment details to do this. If a poker room does ask you for a credit card number, just to open an account, leave and choose another one.
When you create the account you are given a certain amount of play chips. If you lose them all you will be given more.
One of the advantages of Fun money, is that you can learn to play, without risking your own money doing so. Or if you join a new poker room you can get used to the software before you have to put hard cash on the table.
The main disadvantage you’ll tend to find is that because there is no real money at risk, people generally play a lot looser than they would at a real money table. Some players will call every hand down to the river (last community card dealt in holdem), with hands that most good players would fold without question in a real money game.
That said you can get a realistic game sometimes, and for a complete beginner it is a valuable aid to learning the different games and strategies.
If you do decide to play at these tables you should try and make the play chips as important to you as you can. Don’t see every flop and call everything just because other players are doing so. Try to play as you would on a real money table and accumulate chips though tight skillful play rather than pure luck. At Absolute Poker you can earn $50 of real money if you can build up 15 million play chips. Sounds impossible ? Well over one hundred players in the Absolute Poker 15 million chip Hall of Fame would probably disagree. Some of them have done it five times !
Some poker rooms also offer ‘freeroll’ tournaments which are free to enter but have a real cash prize.
Absolute Poker currently have a $50 freeroll every two to three hours which pays $10 to the winner and $5 to the other players who made the final table. There can be up to 2000 players in these freerolls at times so the competition is hot, but its a risk free way to get acquainted with Multi Table tournaments.
So if you want to try your hand at Poker, but don’t want to loose too much money learning the game, play money could be for you.
Good luck
